Griffin Technology announced a new product today that will no doubt be on every geek’s holiday list in the coming months. The HELO TC Helicopter is remote-controlled by an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, and the iOS app uses the multi-touch display of the device as the remote for the HELO TC.
Similar to the AR Drone, the popular iPhone-controlled quadrocopter that shipped in September 2010, the HELO TC can zip around while you control it on the ground with your iOS device. Unlike the four blades on the AR Drone, the HELO TC has twin rotors. The helicopter is intended for indoor use and is built on a lightweight metal frame with a polycarbonate body.
The copter comes with a “Flight Deck” that plugs into your iOS device’s headphone jack and shoots infrared commands to the helicopter. That sounds great, but infrared could be a problem if something gets between you and the helicopter, causing a disruption in your signal.
There are two modes of flight within the app. The first, Touch Control, lets you use the multitouch display to control the chopper’s throttle and joystick. The second mode is Tilt to Steer and it uses the device’s accelerometers. So, when you tilt the iOS device, it moves the helicopter forward, backwards, or side to side.
The app even lets you record and store three flight plans, so you can design a route that has your HELO TC zooming between furniture and avoiding obstacles. Then, you can replay those recorded routes later and show off in front of your friends. Once you really get the hang of navigating the HELO TC, you can fly up to three copters at one time by simply changing the channels within the iOS app.
The HELO TC charges from any USB power source, and the Flight Deck is powered by four AAA batteries. The new gadget will cost you $49.99 which is considerably less expensive than the AR Drone, which has a list price of $299.99. You can get it from Griffin’s online store now, and it will be available at nationwide retailers just in time for you holiday shopping.
