If you’re like me, you love watching TV, but there are just some celebrities who you’d rather not hear about–especially the ones you hear talked about all the time. If only there was a way to automatically block any word of those celebrities on your “Change the Channel” list… Thankfully, one clever programmer discovered a way to do just that.

Matt Richardson came up with an Arduino-based solution called “The Enough Already” that will mute a TV based on certain keywords. The project uses the Video Experimenter Shield which is placed on top of the Arduino board and allows it to decode the closed-captioning text of what’s playing on the TV. The closed captioning transcription is transmitted with the NTSC picture signal.

Then, you simply connect your cable’s composite output into the video input on the shield, and then connect the video-out of the Shield to the TV. The incoming text is processed and looks for a set of keywords like “Kardashian” or “Snooki” and then sends a mute command via an IR remote control. The TV is muted for 30 seconds and then is unmuted as long as the keywords aren’t mentioned again.

Richardson explains in detail how to make your own Enough Already device in the video below and lists the code on his YouTube page. He said the code is a combination of the closed captioning example code for the Video Experimenter Shield and an infrared tutorial. Richardson mentioned that the closed captioning data or IR could be used in other ways, like having a flashing light that’s activated when a word you do like is mentioned on TV. So, if you’re sitting on the couch spacing out as you text your friends, the mention of a certain celebrity you do want to hear about can trigger the light to flash and get your attention.

Obviously, The Enough Already device could be a godsend for those of us who really hate hearing about certain over-exposed celebrities. However, we assume that if a name was mentioned randomly, in a sitcom for example, it would mute the TV show you were in the middle of watching. Clearly, there’s no perfect solution for eliminating all talk of the celebrities you want to avoid.

Back in March we saw something similar called Tinted Sheen, a browser blocker that censors the Internet for you. The plugin applies black bars over Sheen’s name and blacks-out his photo. Other words like “tiger blood” and “winning” were also blocked out by the extension. With enough work, you can make sure both your TV and Internet are Charlie Sheen-free.
